Hitting the Home Stretch

21 days from today I will boarding a plane and flying to my dream. Since I last wrote, I now know whom I will be living with.  And I'm starting to work out travel details! AHHHH! But seriously, I don't believe it yet, and probably won't until I'm on my plane from Atlanta to Dublin.

I will be living with a family of four: Kieran, Sharon, Adam, and Georgia, as well as a puppy and hamster.  Just a few minutes ago I sent my family an email, so hopefully I'll hear back from them soon!  In the one sentence description given to me, they seem like a really fun, easy-going family.  Also, according to Google maps it is about an 8 minute drive to work, which is very convenient.  I wish I had more to say about the company I will be working with, but nothing new to update.

The main purpose of this post is to share some of my goals and dreams for my experience abroad.  It seems that three themes have come to mind.  First, the opportunity to work as a marketing intern in a website design company is a privilege.  I look forward to the culture of the company, the people I meet, and all of the new business and social lessons I learn from my workplace.  Second, I can't wait to meet my family.  One of my stipulations was to live with an Irish family because I wanted to get the full flavor of what life was actually like, what the people are like behind close doors, and how they live on a daily basis.  I'm excited to learn more about my culture and way of life by learning about the culture of the people of Ireland.  Finally, I'm excited to see how God will use this experience for His glory.  It is no coincidence that I am going to Dublin for such a time as this.  I am incredibly exuberrant as to how I can be an ambassador for Christ, what tough and sweet lessons I will learn, and who God will place in my life to teach and to learn from.

Also, this is a sweet experience, but is also an unknown experience for me, and I am fearful about some things.  Friends, would you be in prayer for me as I prepare to leave, travel, and live in a foreign place away from home? Thank you!

Dreams Do Come True

Hi, my name is Heidi.  In a month, I am going to live my dream and fly to Ireland for the summer.  Now, how did I come to do that, you may ask.  Well, let me tell you.
It has been my dream for seven years to visit Ireland.  About a year ago, a thought came to mind that I should go somewhere cool for my required business internship for Northwestern College in St. Paul, MN.  As I labored in a cubicle, stuck in my hometown for the summer, the brainstorming began.
One sunny evening, a friend and I were at Caribou, and she was working on finalizing plans for her study abroad trip to Ireland for the fall.  As it was almost the end of summer, and I had yet to do any research about where to intern for the following summer, I decided to Google internships in Ireland.
Fast forward to Christmas break 2010. I finally was motivated again to do figure this thing out, because I was not ready to be stuck in the Midwest for another year.  I spoke with some career counselors, finalized the company I wanted to work through, and talked with my parents.  I sent out an email of interest to the company, GreenHeart Travel, inquiring about further information.
The whirlwind began. I was forwarded three times to the correct contact and was then told that the Intern in Ireland program was canceled...but "we'll make an exception for you!"
Since I heard "Go!" the planning has not slowed.  I completed my application and was accepted a few weeks later.  That same week, I had interviews with three companies in Ireland via phone and was offered positions in all three. In the next week, I chose the company I wished to work for and submitted my deposit. I'm still waiting to hear about the host family I'll be staying with, but I do have my flight information.  In a little over a month, my bank account will be empty, my family and friends will be left behind, but I will be living my dream!
